The 19th European Colloquium of Arachnology will be held on the campus of Aarhus University, and is organised by the Department of Zoology on behalf of the European Society for Arachnology. The conference will be from 17-21 July 2000, with a post-congress excursion on the 22nd of July. Accommodation is available at a range of prices and qualities, from students hostel rooms at appr. 100 DKK per night (present rates: 1USD = 7.20 ; 1GBP = 11.70; DEM = 3.80 DKK) upwards to normal hotel standard (appr. 600 DKK per night). Canteens are available on campus for lunch at reasonable prices. Participants who want to stay in Aarhus for some time after the conference, or arrive earlier, may book student hostel rooms at the same low rates. Colloquium fees will be: ordinary 1600 DKK, students 1200 DKK, associates 1000 DKK.
The scientific program includes lectures and poster presentations. Slide shows, videos and films can also be presented. A number of invited speakers has kindly agreed to give plenary lectures on topics of general interest:
Rauno V. Alatalo (Jyväskylä): Sexual selection
Otto Kraus (Hamburg): No subspecies in spiders?
Wilson R. Lourenco (Paris): Reproduction in scorpions
Paul A. Selden (Manchester): Arachnid history
Ernst-August Seyfarth (Frankfurt): Sense organs and behaviour
Gabriele Uhl (Bonn): Genital organs
If you intend to participate in the Colloquium please
fill in the Preliminary Registration form, and return it as soon as possible.
Respondents will receive the Second Circular with further details on fees,
accommodation, excursions and programme for accompanying persons; it will
be distributed in February.
Aarhus is the "capital" of Jutland (mainland Denmark)
with many cultural, historical and tourist attractions within easy reach
for one-day excursions. The University campus and reserved accommodation
are within max. a half-hour walking distance from the city centre. Aarhus
is easily accessible by car from continental Europe via the E45 motorway
and has cheap international bus routes to most of Europe. Train connections
to central Europe go via Hamburg. Aarhus and Billund Airports (both ca.
1 hour bus drive away) have connections to a wide range of major international
airports; transit via Copenhagen from all international airports.
Denmark has cultural agreements with several (mostly Eastern European) countries that could provide grants for travel and accommodation. Applications are usually through the national ministries of foreign affairs, and you may need an official invitation from the organisers. We are looking into further funding to provide grants to cover the colloquium fee and/or accommodation for participants who could not come otherwise; again with preference for applications from students and researchers from Eastern Europe. Participants who want to apply for either of these possibilities should contact us (address below).
If there are participants who want to visit the arachnid collections of the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen before or after the congress it is important that they notify Nikolaj Scharff (nscharff@zmuc.ku.dk) before their arrival. There are only a certain amount of work space at the Entomology Department so visits should be coordinated. The museum can arrange accomodation in the University guesthouse at the campus (approx. 10 USD per nigth) but there are only few rooms availabe. Copenhagen is 3-4 hours from Aarhus by train or car.
This and following circulars, incl. Registration forms and updated information concerning the Colloquium, will be available at the Colloquium web-site: http://support.bio.au.dk/spider. Preliminary registration is possible directly through the web-site, or by filling in the registration form below and mail/fax it to us.
Looking forward to seeing you in Aarhus!
